Windermere is a suburban community located in the southwest part of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. It is named after the Windermere area in the Lake District of England. The community's history dates back to the early 2000s when the city of Edmonton began planning and developing the area as part of its ongoing growth and expansion. In 2004, the city annexed the land that would become Windermere, and in 2006, the first residential properties were developed. The community was designed to be a sustainable, walkable neighborhood with a mix of housing types, green spaces, and amenities.
The initial development of Windermere focused on single-family homes and townhouses, with plans for apartments and condominiums to follow. The community also includes several parks, playgrounds, and walking trails, making it a popular destination for outdoor activities. Windermere's commercial development began in 2007 with the opening of the Currents of Windermere shopping center, which includes a mix of retail stores, restaurants, and services.
