There are several things that are classified as a dental emergency – with varying degrees of urgency.

The most common dental emergency is a TOOTHACHE.

When we assess the severity of a toothache these are the symptoms that would indicate that the tooth may be starting to an abscess –

• sensitive to hot and/or cold with pain that lingers for more than a few minutes
• Swelling
• Keeping you awake at night
• Pain that is not resolved with OTC pain killers like ibuprofen or acetametaphine

These are some symptoms that are not considered an emergency and do not require you to contact your dentist

• brief sensitivity to cold that resolves when the cold is removed
• Occasional sensitivity to chewing
• Sensitivity that is resolved with OTC medication

BROKEN OR CHIPPED TOOTH

There are also varying degrees of severity with chipped and broken teeth

• if there is a small chip with no sensitivity you should see your dentist but it is not urgent
• If there is a larger chip but no sensitivity – you should contact your dentist but it is not urgent
• If the chipped or broken tooth has symptoms as noted about under toothache you should contact your dentist immediately
• If a tooth is fractured or knocked out due to trauma this would also be a reason to contact your emergency dentist Edmonton immediately

BADLY BITTEN LIP OR TONGUE

If you bite your lip or tongue and it is bleeding use a clean cloth and put pressure on the area. If the lip is swollen you can ice the area – 10 minutes on and 10 minutes off. If the bleeding will not stop this is actually a medical emergency and you should proceed to a hospital emergency

SOMETHING STUCK BETWEEN YOUR TEETH

Usually, this can be resolved with patience and floss. If you are unsuccessful you can see your dentist or hygienist

LOST FILLING

If you lose a filling and there are none of the symptoms noted under "toothache" you can place sugar-free gum over the affected area. Call your emergency dentist Edmonton and ensure you get in to have the area fixed however it is not urgent if the tooth is asymptomatic

You should go to the hospital emergency room instead of your dentist if you have facial swelling that is spreading quickly, difficulty breathing or swallowing, or bleeding that will not stop.
