West Edmonton Mall

West Edmonton Mall (WEM) is a shopping mall owned, managed, and operated by Triple Five Group in Edmonton, Alberta. It is the second most visited mall in Canada, after the Toronto Eaton Centre, and the 14th largest in the world (along with The Dubai Mall) in terms of gross leasable area. It is currently the second-largest shopping mall in North America by square footage, trailing only the Mall of America. The Mall of America covers 5.6 million square feet, while West Edmonton Mall covers 5.3 million square feet.

West Edmonton Mall has the most stores in the Western Hemisphere, with over 800 occupants, compared to the Mall of America's 520 occupants. The Ghermezian brothers founded the mall after emigrating from Iran in 1959. The mall's major anchor stores include Hudson's Bay, London Drugs, Marshalls, Simons, The Brick, and Winners/HomeSense.

West Edmonton Mall has a gross area of approximately 490,000 m2 (5,300,000 sq ft). It has over 800 stores and services, nine attractions, two hotels, and over 100 dining venues, as well as parking for over 20,000 vehicles. The property employs more than 24,000 people. The mall receives approximately 32 million visitors per year, with daily attendance ranging from 90,000 to 200,000 depending on the day and season.

History of Edmonton Mall

West Edmonton Mall first opened to the public on September 15, 1981. The mall was built in four phases, which were completed in 1981, 1983, 1985, and 1999. Until 2004, it was the world's largest indoor shopping mall, as recognized by the Guinness Book of Records. The four phases of construction are used as a guideline for finding stores and attractions in a color-coded system.

On July 11, 2004, a severe hail and rain storm caused roofs to fail and drains to overflow, causing millions of dollars in damage to the mall. The Ice Palace and surrounding areas were the most severely damaged, and the World Waterpark experienced a sewage overflow. The damage was repaired quickly. Construction on a total renovation of the mall shopping areas began in the spring of 2011. The 'face lift' included a complete renovation of all mall common areas, which began in Phase I and was completed in Phase IV. Learn more about Fort Edmonton Park here.
