4 Questions About Porcelain Veneers Answered
There are many different ways to redesign your smile to get perfectly aligned and glowing white teeth. Some of the dental options available are orthodontics (braces), Invisalign, crowns, veneers, and composite bonding. Each of these procedures is highly successful and is dependant upon your individual oral condition and teeth structure.
1) What are Porcelain Dental Veneers?
Porcelain veneers are thin, wafer-like chips of porcelain custom-made to fit over the surface of your flawed tooth. This creates a look of perfectly aligned teeth, even though the tooth structure underneath may not be. Veneers are custom designed to any shade, size and shape to create a natural looking, flawless smile.
2) What is the Procedure for Porcelain Veneers?
The procedure for porcelain veneers will involve 2 appointments – each approximately 1 hr long and two weeks apart.
At the first appointment, the Dentist will lightly abrade the surface of the flawed tooth. Depending on the sensitivity of the tooth, local freezing may or may not be necessary. A shade will be selected to match the natural shade of your teeth to create a completely natural look. If a whiter, brighter smile is what you want, your dentist may suggest whitening the rest of your teeth prior to this appointment. A detailed impression will be taken of the prepared teeth and will be used to create the custom-fit porcelain veneers. Temporary veneers will be placed over your teeth while the dental lab makes the porcelain restorations.
At the second appointment, the temporary veneers will be removed and the porcelain veneers will be tried in place. Both the tooth structure and porcelain veneer will be prepared with special materials to permanently bond the restorations into place. Once cemented into position, small adjustments to the porcelain may be necessary to fit with your specific bite. Thereafter, you are able to show off your new confident smile!
3) How Long Do Porcelain Veneers Last?
With good oral hygiene, porcelain veneers can last for about ten to fifteen years. If you are a habitual grinder, a nightguard (splint) may be recommended to maintain your veneers and prevent the porcelain from chipping.
Regular dental and hygiene appointments are necessary to maintain the health of your gums, teeth, and all dental restorations
