History of Southeast Edmonton

The arrival of the Canadian Pacific Railway in the early 1900s had a significant impact on the area's development, as it opened up new avenues for trade and commerce.

The area began to see significant residential development in the early twentieth century, with the construction of neighborhoods such as Bonnie Doon, Capilano, and Forest Heights. These neighborhoods, which were distinguished by their distinctive post-war bungalow-style homes, provided housing options for the city's growing population. The area continued to grow during the mid-twentieth century, with the construction of new residential neighborhoods such as Mill Woods, which was one of the largest suburban developments in North America at the time. The South Edmonton Common shopping center opened in the 1990s, bringing new commercial opportunities to the area, and it has since grown to become one of the city's largest retail centers.

Southeast Edmonton has seen significant changes in recent years, with the redevelopment of older neighborhoods and the construction of new commercial and residential developments. The development of new recreational facilities, such as the Meadows Community Recreation Centre, and the expansion of the LRT (light rail transit) system have also been significant developments in the area.

The Southeast Area Structure Plan called for three distinct neighbourhoods. The Southeast Area Plan was approved by City Council in February 1998. Today, the Southeast Edmonton area includes the following: Charlesworth; Mattson, as well as Walker. In addition to the Southeast Area Structure Plan, the following plans were adopted to help guide the development of specific areas in Southeast Edmonton: in 2005, the Charlesworth Neighbourhood Structure Plan (NSP) was adopted, which applies to the Charlesworth neighborhood; and Walker NSP, which applies to the Walker neighborhood, was established in 2007.
