History of Mill Woods
Mill Woods was originally designated as land for an Indian reserve intended for the Papaschase, a Métis-Cree band that signed treaties between 1876 and 1891. However, in 1891, the reserve was considered abandoned, and the land became available for agricultural settlement and purchase by new settlers. A portion of the land was settled by Moravian Brethren from Germany and Russia, and some of it formed a short-lived communal farm associated with the Bruederheim Moravian church.
In 1970, the City of Edmonton started acquiring land in the area to address the shortage and increasing cost of serviced land in the vicinity. City administrators developed a plan for the Mill Woods area, which was approved in March 1971. The plan envisioned eight communities and a town center community, with an expected population of approximately 120,000 people at full build-out.
