History of West Edmonton
West Edmonton, also known as Calder, was a village that was absorbed by the City of Edmonton on April 17, 1917. On July 6, 1910, it was incorporated as the Village of West Edmonton, comprising one-quarter section. Within three years, the community was renamed Calder Village.
The former village was located just north of the Hudson's Bay Company reserve lands on the northeast corner of 127 Street and 127 Avenue[11]. The Hudson's Bay Company "delayed the sale and development of approximately 1,600 acres (6 km2) of its reserve lands in order to benefit from rising real estate prices in pre-World War I Edmonton." The railway was responsible for the community's existence. The Grand Trunk Pacific Railway built its roundhouse, repair shops, and shunting yard near the community's site.
