And not usually anything healthy. Not only is this time of year hard on our waistlines, but it can be hard on our teeth as well. We have always been told that we should brush right after eating. Well, guess what!? Apparently this isn’t the best idea. When we eat, the acid level in our mouth increases. It is this acid that helps create cavities. When we brush right after eating we can actually be putting more acid on the teeth. Who knew? So what can we do to counteract this acid attack on our teeth? There are foods that are more “basic” (See…high school chemistry wasn’t a complete waste! Lol!) Here are some foods that are more “basic” that you can have after you eat to help reduce the acid in your mouth:

  • Sugar free gum, especially those containing Xylitol
  • A handful of nuts
  • A piece of cheese
  • An apple

We are not saying that you shouldn’t brush your teeth – no, no, no! Just wait before you pick up that toothbrush. We are also definitely not saying you shouldn’t eat treats this time of year – no, no, no! After all, Tis the Season!
