Many people suffer from the chronic pain associated with Teporomandibular Joint Syndrome (TMJ). This is also known as Temporomandibular Dysfunction (TMD) and Myofacial Pain Syndrome (MPS). This is a common problem afflicting more than 40 million people.

These symptoms include:

  • Headaches
  • Pain Behind the eyes
  • Unexplained loose teeth
  • Pain in face or neck
  • Congested stuffy ears
  • Numbness in fingers or arms
  • Limited Jaw Opening or Locking
  • Insomnia or Depression
  • Tooth Pain
  • Snoring or Sleep Apnea
  • Cracking or breaking of teeth or dental restorations

These symptoms can be very frustrating for patients, as they have not found relief from other medical providers, and have “learned to live with it” We use the same computerized analysis that has been used in medicine for years. The goal of these tests is to provide individual and precise treatment plans that most often lead to the elimination of pain. The underlying cause of pain is muscular. We are different and more successful in treating headaches and TMJ signs and symptoms because we correct the muscles that are out of balance causing the pain.

We start by assessing the health of the joint itself. We use sonography (joint sound analysis) to evaluate the clicking and popping noises generated by the joint. In conjunction with special joint x-rays (corrected tomograms) these tests allow us to ascertain the extent of the damage to the joint itself.

To correct the jaw muscle alignment, we first relax the dysfunctional muscles. We do this by use of Transcutaneous Electrical Neural Stimulation (TENS). This technique allows us to relax over worked (hypertonic) muscles into a position of optimum resting length. We use TENS in conjunction with Electromyography (EMG) and computerized jaw tracking to find the optimum position of the jaw. With the jaw in the ideal neuromuscular position, we can provide therapy to relieve and improve the health and performance of the muscles. We can often help patients who have had unsuccessful TMJ treatment in the past. Past treatments have usually centered on Joint manipulation versus muscular balance. Focusing on the muscles give the best avenue for success

There are many components that may contribute to this complex condition. While there may be a biochemical and emotional component, a structural imbalance creates disharmony between teeth, jaw position, and the muscles that control the lower jaw.

Many people suffer from this chronic illness. While some do not experience pain, they may have worn, chipped or broken teeth, or fillings. These individuals can also benefit from treatment. If you or a loved one suffers from TMJ pain, we invite you to call Dr. Rodgers to discuss this exciting therapy. For your convince we have available a complimentary copy of “ Getting your bite right!
