TYPES OF DENTAL CROWNS

When you are in need of a dental crown, you will have a wide variety of materials out of which the dental crown is made. The most common types of dental crowns include:

  • Metal crowns: Metal crowns rarely chip because they are extremely hard and durable. Typically, they are made from gold, palladium, nickel, or chromium. They are able to withstand biting and chewing and only require a small amount of your tooth to be removed. The only issue that some patients have with them is the metallic color, so they are ideal for large molars which are not usually visible.
  • Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns: When you want a permanent crown that matches the color of your natural teeth, the porcelain fused-to-metal crowns may be the right choice for you. By matching the color of the surrounding teeth, you will barely be able to notice that you have a crown at all. You may, however, see a thin, dark line on the crowned tooth if the metal happens to show through the porcelain cap. They can also be chipped more easily by the opposing teeth in the mouth.
  • All-resin crowns: For a less expensive type of crown for your broken tooth, you may consider all-resin crowns. Due to the material they are made from, though, you may experience chipping or breaking more easily than porcelain crowns.
  • All-ceramic crowns or all-porcelain crowns: If you are not interested in metal or resin crowns, you may consider all-porcelain or ceramic crowns. They are a great choice for front teeth since they can be matched with the natural teeth color (better than other types of dental crowns), and ceramic is one of the best options if you happen to have a metal allergy. These crowns are not as strong as porcelain fused to metal but are still an excellent option.
  • Pressed crowns: Pressed ceramic crowns use ceramic instead of metal in the liner during the crown-making process in a dental laboratory. They are capped with porcelain, so you know you will be getting a great color match but are longer lasting than porcelain.

You have a wide variety of choices when it comes to the types of dental crowns available. To decide which permanent crown best suits your dental health needs, talk to your dentist.

WHAT IS A DENTAL CROWN?

Crowns are a type of dental restoration which, when cemented into place, fully cup over the portion of a tooth which lies at and above the gum line. Crowns encase the entire visible aspect of the tooth. A dental crown in effect becomes the tooth’s new outer surface.

Crowns address aesthetic needs, restore tooth function, and enhance the overall health of your mouth. In cases where teeth have large broken down feeling, a Crown can protect and preserve the remaining natural tooth. To enhance your smile, a metal-free tooth colored crown can also replace an older metal/porcelain crown. Following root canal therapy, a crown is typically placed over the remaining tooth structure to preserve aesthetic and tooth function.

BENEFITS OF CERAMIC, METAL, OR PORCELAIN CROWNS

Whether you are getting gold crowns or you have opted for porcelain, a dental crown is going to provide you with many oral health benefits. These advantages include:

  • Protecting a weak tooth from tooth decay
  • Restoring a broken or severely worn down tooth
  • Providing support to a tooth with a large filling and very little tooth left
  • Helping to hold a dental bridge in place
  • Covering misshapen or severely discolored teeth, a dental implant, or a tooth that has undergone a root canal treatment

The dental crown procedure is a routine procedure, and our dental team at Dr. Molly Rogers and Associates Dental Clinic in Edmonton, AB, will make sure that your permanent teeth are kept safe through permanent crowns.

HOW MUCH DO DENTAL CROWNS COST?

As with most medical procedures, the cost of dental crowns varies depending on the location in which you live, the material used to make your crown, and the difficulty of getting to the decayed tooth in your mouth. In general, crowns will cost between $800 and $1500+ per crown. Check with your insurance company to find out if the cost of the crown is covered in your policy.
